...artificial intelligence, biological intelligence, evolution and pure logic...!

Bio-Inspired Artificial Intelligence: Theories, Methods, and Technologies (Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Agents series) [Hardcover]
Dario Floreano (Author), Claudio Mattiussi (Author)

Book Description
Publication Date: August 22, 2008 | ISBN-10: 0262062712 | ISBN-13: 978-0262062718

New approaches to artificial intelligence spring from the idea that intelligence emerges as much from cells, bodies, and societies as it does from evolution, development, and learning. Traditionally, artificial intelligence has been concerned with reproducing the abilities of human brains; newer approaches take inspiration from a wider range of biological structures that that are capable of autonomous self-organization. Examples of these new approaches include evolutionary computation and evolutionary electronics, artificial neural networks, immune systems, biorobotics, and swarm intelligence--to mention only a few. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the emerging field of biologically inspired artificial intelligence that can be used as an upper-level text or as a reference for researchers. Each chapter presents computational approaches inspired by a different biological system; each begins with background information about the biological system and then proceeds to develop computational models that make use of biological concepts. The chapters cover evolutionary computation and electronics; cellular systems; neural systems, including neuromorphic engineering; developmental systems; immune systems; behavioral systems--including several approaches to robotics, including behavior-based, bio-mimetic, epigenetic, and evolutionary robots; and collective systems, including swarm robotics as well as cooperative and competitive co-evolving systems. Chapters end with a concluding overview and suggested reading.

...if you need a different approach to informatics, please refer to informatics logic of my Book: Book of Pure Logic...!

...please note that for Evolution, information and it's correct management [contrary to: insanity, or illogic thinking], is self developed via no-reason and hence no real sense, self formation and interaction of atoms, molecules, since and from the origin of "life"...!

...for pure logic, information can only proceed from equal capability information source, thus opening the paradox and pandora box of the endless regressive loop of origins explanations, that I explain against in my Book 1, and will finally most likely conclude explaining in my Book 2...!

...because the countering logic used by me in pure logic, to appealing to the non-regressive endless loop of origins that is Evolution theory of modern Science, is advanced logic beyond most logic used so far, it is not mastered very well in most minds...! A "nasty" God of the Bible is way far bellow any pure logic...!

Cyber-attack concerns raised over Boeing 787 chip's 'back door'
Researchers claim chip used in military systems and civilian aircraft has built-in function that could let in hackers    Charles Arthur, Tuesday 29 May 2012 18.47 BST

lest we forget or this be
made forgotten...! lets
get it all...!

Two Cambridge experts have discovered a "back door" in a computer chip used in military systems and aircraft such as the Boeing 787 that could allow the chip to be taken over via the internet.

The discovery will heighten concerns about the risks of cyber-attacks on sensitive installations, coming on the heels of the discovery this week of the 'Flamer' virus which has been attacking computer systems in Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

In a paper that has been published in draft form online and seen by the Guardian, researchers Sergei Skorobogatov of Cambridge University and Chris Woods of Quo Vadis Labs say that they have discovered a method that a hacker can use to connect to the internals of a chip made by Actel, a US manufacturer.

"An attacker can disable all the security on the chip, reprogram cryptographic and access keys … or permanently damage the device," they noted.

Woods told the Guardian that they have offered all the necessary information about how the hack can be done to government agencies – but that their response is classified.

"The real issue is the level of security that can be compromised through any back door, and how easy they are to find and exploit," Woods said.

The back door may have been inserted by Actel itself, whose ProASIC3 chip is used in medical, automotive, communications and consumer products, as well as military use.

Woods said that "a back door is an additional undocumented featured deliberately inserted into a device for extra functionality" – in effect, a secret way to get into the chip and control it.

Crucially, in this case it exists as part of the design of the silicon chip – meaning that it cannot be removed because it is inherent in how the chip reacts to certain inputs. He suggested that it may have been put there by design by Actel, because there are some traces of the existence of such a back door in the system files of Actel development software.

But, he said, that creates serious risks: "The great danger comes from the fact that such a back door undermines the high level of security in the chip making it exposed to various attacks. Although Actel makes a big claim that their devices are extremely secure because there is no physical path for the configuration data to be read to the outside world, a back door was added with a special key to circumnavigate all the security set by themselves or one of their users."

Connecting to the chips would be comparatively easy over the internet if the chip is wired to an internet-enabled controller, he said. Normally a special cryptographic key would be needed, but the back door does not need an encrypted channel.

Among applications where the ProASIC3 are used are remote surveillance systems, drones, and for flight-critical applications on the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Actel did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

Rik Ferguson, director of security research at the online security company Trend Micro, said: "This kind of flaw that gives somebody access right into the device has inherent flaws. The fact that it's in the hardware will certainly make it harder – if not impossible – to eradicate. We're already seeing a steady flow of devices such as digital picture frames coming out of factories with malware already on them – but that's software which can be fixed. If you have this sort of flaw, then you need to replace the hardware, which means the chips."

But suggestions that it is part of a cyber-attack by China, where the chip is made, have been discounted.

"It was very likely done at the design stage," said Woods. "However, the traces left in the Actel development software suggest that this feature was well thought through from the very beginning." He doubts it is part of a Chinese state-sponsored sabotage attempt.

Skorobogatov and Woods will present a paper on their findings at a conference in Belgium in September.

...only Intel, AMD, and other chip makers, know in such small size, what back doors these chips have, even to external wireless transmission, and eavesdropping capture...!

...why does not the God of the Talmud, manifest "himself"...???

Rabbi Levi Brackman
Why won’t God reveal himself again?
According to tradition, collective transcendence above ego was key for revelation
Published:     05.27.12, 08:05 / Israel Jewish Scene,7340,L-4234130,00.html,7340,L-3443,00.html

As a Jew I believe that there was a divine revelation at Sinai thirty five hundred years ago. This revelation, I believe, took place in front of thousands of people. But here’s the problem the believer confronts: if God revels Himself to humankind, why has it only happened once in the course of history?

The answer may be found in the following a cryptic verse in Leviticus (9:6): Moses said, "This is the thing the Lord has commanded; do it, and the glory of the Lord will appear to you." Unfortunately, however, the “thing” one must do in order for the glory of God to appear to us is not stated clearly.

The Jewish-Christian divide / Dan Calic
Op-ed: Christians, Jews must overcome mutual misconceptions in order to achieve reconciliation
Full Story

An analysis of the verses seems to indicate that the “thing” refers to the sacrifices. In other words, through sacrificing animals one beholds the glory of the Lord. Notwithstanding the biblical reference to the physical slaughtering of an animal and burning it on the Temple alter; sacrifices also have tremendous symbolic meaning.

Animals act on instinct and therefore do not posses free will. Furthermore animals lack the ability to speak. Humans also have a higher form of intelligence than animals.

Simultaneously, however there are aspects in which humans and animals are very similar. We all have animalistic tendencies—the desire to act on instinct alone without thinking it through or making a balanced choice. The ability to make a rational choice in the areas of ethics and morality is uniquely human. It is in this sense that the Torah maintains that humans were created in the image of the Divine.

Sacrifices symbolize the human ability to transcend that animalistic self, to act in a manner that is uniquely human and reaching a high level of self-mastery. All this results in a revelation of the glory of the Divine (see Samson Raphael Hirsch).

Tradition relates that, thirty-five hundred years ago, the ancient Israelites in the desert spent seven weeks preparing for the revelation at Sinai. This preparation included a thorough self inventory of themselves and their actions so that they were able to transcend their animal instincts and reach self-mastery. Upon collectively completing this intensive seven-week course of self-discipline and overcoming those aspects that inhibit actualizing full human potential, the glory of God reveled itself to the entire community as one.

The Torah says that the Israelites encamped across from the mountain of Sinai (Exodus 19). Tradition has it that during this period the entire community encamped like one man with one heart (Mechilta, see Rashi). This indicates a collective transcendence of ego and base instincts. They were now able to collectively witness the revelation of the Divine glory. This might well be what occurred at Mount Sinai thousands of years ago.

The fact that this type of collective Divine revelation has only occurred once in history has to do with our inability to once again collectively transcend our animalistic selves. But it tells us little about the nature of Divine revelation to humankind.

LRO - NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter...!

LRO - NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)
lest we forget or the truth be never known...!

NASA Spacecraft Images Offer Sharper Views of Apollo Landing Sites
Media briefing materials associated with this story can be found here.

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured the sharpest images ever taken from space of the Apollo 12, 14 and 17 landing sites. Images show the twists and turns of the paths made when the astronauts explored the lunar surface.

This interactive shows two LRO images of the Apollo 17 landing site. Click and drag on the white slider bar to wipe from one to the other. At the Apollo 17 site, the tracks laid down by the lunar rover are clearly visible, along with the last foot trails left on the moon. The images also show where the astronauts placed some of the scientific instruments that provided the first insight into the moon's environment and interior.

"We can retrace the astronauts' steps with greater clarity to see where they took lunar samples," said Noah Petro, a lunar geologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., who is a member of the LRO project science team.

All three images show distinct trails left in the moon's thin soil when the astronauts exited the lunar modules and explored on foot. In the Apollo 17 image, the foot trails, including the last path made on the moon by humans, are easily distinguished from the dual tracks left by the lunar rover, which remains parked east of the lander.

"The new low-altitude Narrow Angle Camera images sharpen our view of the moon's surface," said Arizona State University researcher Mark Robinson, principal investigator for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). "A great example is the sharpness of the rover tracks at the Apollo 17 site. In previous images the rover tracks were visible, but now they are sharp parallel lines on the surface."

At each site, trails also run to the west of the landers, where the astronauts placed the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) to monitor the moon's environment and interior.

This equipment was a key part of every Apollo mission. It provided the first insights into the moon's internal structure, measurements of the lunar surface pressure and the composition of its atmosphere. Apollo 11 carried a simpler version of the science package.

One of the details that shows up is a bright L-shape in the Apollo 12 image. It marks the locations of cables running from ALSEP's central station to two of its instruments. Although the cables are much too small for direct viewing, they show up because they reflect light very well.

The higher resolution of these images is possible because of adjustments made to LRO's orbit, which is slightly oval-shaped or elliptical. "Without changing the average altitude, we made the orbit more elliptical, so the lowest part of the orbit is on the sunlit side of the moon," said Goddard's John Keller, deputy LRO project scientist. "This put LRO in a perfect position to take these new pictures of the surface."

The maneuver lowered LRO from its usual altitude of approximately 31 miles (50 kilometers) to an altitude that dipped as low as nearly 13 miles (21 kilometers) as it passed over the moon's surface. The spacecraft has remained in this orbit for 28 days, long enough for the moon to completely rotate. This allows full coverage of the surface by LROC's Wide Angle Camera. The cycle ends today when the spacecraft will be returned to its 31-mile orbit.

"These images remind us of our fantastic Apollo history and beckon us to continue to move forward in exploration of our solar system," said Jim Green, director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

LRO was built and managed by Goddard. Initial research was funded by the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. In September 2010, after a one-year successful exploration mission, the mission turned its attention from exploration objectives to scientific research in NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

Headquarters: We will not renounce our aims until Israel is “razed to the ground”

Major-Gen Seyyed Hasan Firuzabadi, Chief of the General Command Headquarters of the Iranian Military Forces, has said that Israel poses a threat to all nations,

All nations should feel the danger and threat that the Zionist Regime poses to them. Iran will not give up its goal until Israel is razed to the ground.

At the First Conference for Developing Imam Khamenei’s Defense Doctrine, organized by the Political Ideology Department of the Ministry of Defense, and in the presence of senior military leaders, and scientists and scholars researchers from Malek-Ashtar University of Technology, Firuzabadi said that the Supreme Leader’s defense doctrine is based on a divine idea. It is a reservoir of political, strategic, tactical and operational ideas that, if followed correctly, will lead to stability and security. This doctrine is based on a series of positive and negative principles that protect Iran against the conventional and soft warfare waged by its enemies. The doctrine encapsulates the complete Islamic principles and characteristics for knowing the enemy that emerge from the anti-imperialism doctrine of Imam Khamenei school. The struggle against imperialism, defense of the goals and aspirations of Palestine, warning against the dangers posed by the Zionist Regime, creating a line of defense, bolstering fighters’ morale, and the sacred blend of victory and martyrdom, defense and holy war (jihad) for fulfilling our task require paying attention to the means of war, developing science and strengthening defensive capabilities for both conventional and soft warfare. These are all part of Khamenei’s command doctrine. Firuzabadi particularly stressed that defending the goals and aspirations of Palestine while totally rejecting of any type of conciliation is one of the most important principles of the Khamenei doctrine. The Imam considered defending Palestine a substantive obligation and declared that any other sovereign over Palestinian land must be considered an occupying force. The Iranian people will uphold the principle of destroying the Zionist regime to the very end.

...AMAZINGLY Canada gets blasted by UN envoy over the "poor"...!

UN food envoy blasts inequality, poverty in Canada

OTTAWA—Despite Canada’s riches, many Canadians are suffering from poverty, inequality and an inability to afford daily food needs, says a scathing United Nations report released Wednesday.

“What I’ve seen in Canada is a system that presents barriers for the poor to access nutritious diets and that tolerates increased inequalities between rich and poor, and aboriginal non-aboriginal peoples,” said Olivier De Schutter, the UN right-to-food envoy.

“Canada has long been seen as a land of plenty. Yet today one in 10 families with a child under 6 is unable to meet their daily food needs. These rates of food insecurity are unacceptable, and it is time for Canada to adopt a national right-to-food strategy,” said De Schutter.

"Last year, he said, close to 900,000 Canadians were turning to food banks each month."

"His report also described the situation in many of Canada’s aboriginal communities as desperate."

UN envoy blasts Canada for ‘self-righteous’ attitude over hunger, poverty

Sarah Schmidt, Postmedia News  May 15, 2012 – 7:56 PM ET | Last Updated: May 15, 2012 8:26 PM ET

De Schutter is the first to admit that Canada’s record is wanton when it comes to responding to concerns flagged by UN human rights bodies. But he bristles at any suggestion that he has no business in Canada.

“It’s even more shocking to me to see that there are 900,000 households in Canada that are food insecure and up to 2.5 million people precisely because this is a wealthy country. It’s even less excusable,” said De Schutter.

“It’s not because the country is a wealthy country that there are no problems. In fact, the problems are very significant and, frankly, this sort of self-righteousness about the situation being good in Canada is not corresponding to what I saw on the ground, not at all.”

NASA Survey Counts Potentially Hazardous Asteroids - NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

New results from NASA's NEOWISE survey find that more potentially hazardous asteroids, or PHAs, are closely aligned with the plane of our solar system than previous models suggested. PHAs are the subset of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) with the closest orbits to Earth's orbit, coming within 5 million miles (about 8 million kilometers). They are also defined as being large enough to survive passage through Earth's atmosphere and cause damage on a regional, or greater, scale. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
NASA Survey Counts Potentially Hazardous Asteroids - NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

May 16, 2012
PASADENA, Calif. -- Observations from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have led to the best assessment yet of our solar system's population of potentially hazardous asteroids. The results reveal new information about their total numbers, origins and the possible dangers they may pose.

Potentially hazardous asteroids, or PHAs, are a subset of the larger group of near-Earth asteroids. The PHAs have the closest orbits to Earth's, coming within five million miles (about eight million kilometers), and they are big enough to survive passing through Earth's atmosphere and cause damage on a regional, or greater, scale.

The new results come from the asteroid-hunting portion of the WISE mission, called NEOWISE. The project sampled 107 PHAs to make predictions about the entire population as a whole. Findings indicate there are roughly 4,700 PHAs, plus or minus 1,500, with diameters larger than 330 feet (about 100 meters). So far, an estimated 20 to 30 percent of these objects have been found.

...these amounts of near earth orbit objects, do create a big problem in pure logic...!  the plus is they are a bigger problem for the Bible logic...! there is no mention of such things, other than stars falling or whatever, as they cannot be a result of humans sins...! well not to the logic of pure logic...!

SpaceX says All Systems GO for Historic May 19 Blast Off to ISS

In less than 48 hours, SpaceX is primed to make history and launch the first ever commercial rocket and spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) early Saturday morning on May 19.
Following today’s Launch Readiness Review (LRR), SpaceX was just given the official “GO” from NASA to proceed with the blastoff of the Falcon 9 at 4:55 a.m. EDT (0855 GMT) from Space Launch Complex-40 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. This also marks the first night time liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket.

Federal public service braces for 10,000 more job cuts: group
Kathryn May, Postmedia News  May 17, 2012 – 7:35 AM ET

OTTAWA — Federal departments are girded to lose more than 10,000 jobs over the next three years before they swallow the $5.2-billion spending reductions announced in the federal budget that will wipe out another 19,200 jobs in the same period.

The yearly reports on plans and priorities that departments tabled in Parliament last week show that 10,400 full-time positions will disappear over the next three years, said David Macdonald, chief economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, who tallied the numbers. That means departments are cutting 29,600 jobs between now and 2015.

Departments have handed out more than 18,000 notices to employees, warning them they could lose their jobs, since the federal budget was released — and the numbers continue to rise. The Fisheries and Oceans Department is expected to send notices this week to about 1,000 employees across the country.

The reports, which don’t include the spending cuts in the budget, offer a picture of how many jobs departments are losing before they begin to implement the 2012 budget measures. They also confirm the overall job losses will be much higher than the 19,200 the Conservatives have said would disappear from payroll.

...political false claims, debt budget balancing, and austerity, and spending cuts...! completely absurd, and when they say all this politico, you idiots should know it is non-sense...! they are not creating jobs, they are "cutting jobs", under the false logic of spending cuts, when they are the ones that make and print the money...!

...when you hear of the Conservatives claiming to you, that they are doing good, when they cut jobs in government...! if you think it is ok, you are ignorant...!

..when someday you hear that agovernment is increasing spending and doubling the budget, to give work for all in EI, and Welfare, then you will be able to say, finally we got rid of ancient logic nuts in government ...!

...meanwhile in economics the World has not progressed much, as to the logic of por, peasants, homeless, unemplyed, etc., since the Greeks 2000 years ago...!

THE recent Vatican edict that reproached American nuns for their liberal views on social and political issues has put a spotlight on the practices of these Roman Catholic sisters. While the current debate has focused on the nuns’ progressive stances on birth control, abortion, homosexuality, the all-male priesthood and economic injustice, tension between American nuns and the church’s male hierarchy reaches much further back.

In the 19th century, Catholic nuns literally built the church in the American West, braving hardship and grueling circumstances to establish missions, set up classrooms and lead lives of calm in a chaotic world marked by corruption, criminality and illness. Their determination in the face of a male hierarchy that, then as now, frequently exploited and disdained them was a demonstration of their resilient faith in a church struggling to adapt itself to change.

Like other settlers in the West, Catholic nuns were mostly migrants from Europe or the American East; the church had turned to them to create a Catholic presence across a seemingly limitless frontier. The region’s rocky mining camps, grassy plains and arid deserts did not appeal to many ordained men. As one disenchanted European priest, lamenting the lack of a good cook and the discomfort of frontier travel, grumbled, “I hate the long, dreary winters of Iowa.”

Bishops relentlessly recruited sisters for Western missions, enticing them with images of Christian conversions, helpful local clergymen and charming convent cottages. If the sisters hesitated, the bishops mocked their timidity, scorned their selfishness and threatened heavenly retribution.

The sisters proved them wrong. By steamboat, train, stagecoach and canoe, on foot and on horseback, the nuns answered the call. In the 1840s, a half-dozen sisters from Notre Dame de Namur, a Belgian order, braved stormy seas and dense fog to reach Oregon. In 1852, seven Daughters of Charity struggled on the backs of donkeys across the rain-soaked Isthmus of Panama toward California. In 1884, six Ursuline nuns stepped from a train in Montana, only to be left by the bishop at a raucous public rooming house, its unheated loft furnished only with wind and drifting snow.

These nuns lived in filthy dugouts, barns and stables, hoped for donations of furniture, and survived on a daily ration of one slice of bread or a bowl of onion soup along with a cup of tea. They made their own way, worked endless hours, often walked miles to a Catholic chapel for services, and endured daunting privations in housing and nutrition.

There appeared to be no end to what was expected of the sisters. In 1874, two Sisters of the Holy Cross, at the direction of Edward Sorin, the founder of the University of Notre Dame, opened a Texas school and orphanage in a two-room shack with a leaky dormitory garret that the nuns affectionately labeled “The Ark.” The brother who managed the congregation’s large farm informed the sisters, who were barely able to feed and clothe the 80 boarders, that he could not give the school free produce — though they could buy it at a discount. The sisters also did 18 years of unpaid housekeeping work on a farm run by the men.

Sisters adapted to these physical, spiritual and fiscal exploitations with amazingly good humor. Still, they chafed against their male superiors’ unreasonable restrictions and harsh dictates. When they directly questioned policy, bishops and priests moved to silence them. A single protest could draw draconian reprisals on an entire congregation.

In 1886, four Texas priests demanded that Bishop John C. Néraz replace a superior, Mother St. Andrew Feltin, saying that she had “spread gossip” and warned her sisters “to beware of priests.”

Bishop Néraz threatened the sisterhood with disbandment and removed Mother St. Andrew from office. He hounded her for years, disciplined other nuns she had befriended, suspended her right to the sacraments, warned other bishops not to grant her sanctuary, undercut her efforts to enter a California convent and even urged her deportation to Europe. Finally, Mother St. Andrew laid aside her religious clothing, returned to secular dress and cared for her widowed brother’s children.

Six years after Bishop Néraz died, Mother St. Andrew petitioned her congregation for readmission. Donning her habit, she renewed her vows amid a warm welcome from sisters who understood too well what she had suffered.

Then as now, not all priests and bishops treated sisters badly, though the priests who reached out to nuns in a spirit of appreciation, friendship and equality could not alter the church’s institutional commitment to gender discrimination. And, as now, some bishops, dismissive of the laity, underestimated the loyalty secular Catholics felt for their nuns.

In the case of Mother St. Andrew, tenacity and spirituality triumphed over arrogance and misogyny. The Vatican would do well to bear this history in mind as it thinks through the consequences of its unjust attack on American sisters.

Anne M. Butler, a professor emerita of history at Utah State University, is the author of the forthcoming book “Across God’s Frontiers: Catholic Sisters in the American West, 1850-1920.”

Bomb targeting Colombia politician kills at least two

At least two people have been killed in an attack on a politician in the Colombian capital, Bogota.

Police said an unidentified assailant attached an explosive device to the car of former Interior Minister Fernando Londono.

The blast killed his driver and a bodyguard, but Mr Londono, 68, was not seriously injured.

Earlier reports had spoken of five dead, but a Bogota police commander said he could only confirm two deaths.

Around 40 people are reported to have been injured in the blast.

Mr Londono was hit by shrapnel and is having surgery to remove a piece of metal lodged near his clavicle.

Hospital sources said he was in a stable condition.

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity will spend the next several months at a site informally named "Greeley Haven." The name is a tribute to planetary geologist Ronald Greeley (1939-2011), who was a member of the science team for the Mars rovers and many other interplanetary missions.

The site is an outcrop that provides a sun-facing slope to aid in maintaining adequate solar power during the rover's fifth Martian winter. It also provides targets of scientific interest for the rover's robotic arm to examine.

Closer to the equator than its twin rover, Spirit, Opportunity did not need to stay on a sun-facing slope during previous winters. Now, however, Opportunity's solar panels carry a thicker coating of dust than in the previous winters. Unless an unlikely wind cleans the panels in coming weeks, the team will use a strategy employed for three winters with Spirit: staying on a sun-facing slope. For several months of shortened daylight before and after the southern Mars winter solstice on March 30, 2012, the sun will pass relatively low in the northern sky from the rover's perspective, and Opportunity will work on the north-facing slope.

Plans for research at Greeley Haven include a radio-science investigation of the interior of Mars, which began this week; inspections of mineral compositions and textures on the outcrop; and recording a full-circle, color panorama: the Greeley Panorama. Greeley taught generations of planetary scientists at Arizona State University, Tempe, until his death two months ago.

The radio-science investigation studies tiny wobbles in the rotation of Mars to gain insight about the planet's core. It requires many weeks of radio-tracking the motion of a point on the surface of Mars to measure changes in the spin axis of the planet.

The winter worksite sits on the "Cape York" segment of the rim of Endeavour Crater. Opportunity reached the edge of this 14-mile-wide (22-kilometer-wide) crater five months ago after three years of driving from smaller Victoria Crater, which it studied for two years.

Opportunity and Spirit completed their three-month prime missions in April 2004 and continued for years of bonus, extended missions. Both rovers have made important discoveries about wet environments on ancient Mars that may have been favorable for supporting microbial life. Spirit ended communications in March 2010 as its energy declined after losing the use of two of its six wheels, which prevented it from being able to gain a sun-facing tilt for its fourth Martian winter.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington. ...What Greece did: the Senate [I do not know what the Senate of Canada is for, do you ?]
...And folks " Canada polis-city, or polis Country ":

An Introduction to Ancient Greece
Part 1: The City-State and Sparta
Ancient Greece wasn't one large empire but a collection of smaller city-states. The term the Greeks used was polis, which meant (more or less) "city-state." A polis was bigger than a city but smaller than a state. They were scattered throughout the Mediterranean area. Some were sea-ports; others were more inland. Some of the more famous city-states were Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Delphi, and Thebes.
The people living in these city-states were all Greek, coming from a common heritage. But the people of each city-state did different things and had different beliefs.
Sparta, for instance, was a place of great determination. The Spartans believed in a strong army. All Spartan boys were trained to be soldiers. When the Persians invaded Greece, the other city-states looked especially to Sparta and its army to keep them safe.
The creation of the Spartan military state is credited to Lycurgus, a legendary man who gave Sparta is laws. He said that land should be divided equally among all people. He also said that all people should eat meals together in large halls, so the rich couldn't enjoy food while the poor starved. Most famous, perhaps, is the Senate, a part of government that made laws and kept tyrants in check.
